The most confusing aspect of playing
roulette is the way bets can be placed
on the table before the wheel spins. You
can make inside bets and outside bets,
combination bets, and straight bets.
Just trying to keep a track of them all
is confusing!
Here is a quick 'pocket guide' for all
of you roulette players who are new to
the game of just need a refresher
course.
Inside Betting
Inside bets are made on the numbered
squares on the inside of the table.
Straight up - this is a bet that is
placed on a single number.
Split bet - a wager made on two
individual numbers. This type of bet is
made by placing your chips on the line
between the two numbers you are wagering
on.
Street or line bet - this type of bet is
made by placing your chips on the
vertical line that separates the outside
and inside betting area so that the chip
straddles the first number in the row.
Double street bet - wagered the same way
as the street or line bet, the chip is
placed on the line that separates the
inside and outside lines but also
straddles the line horizontal line for
the rows above and below.
Corner or quad bet - place your chip so
that it touches the corners of the four
numbers you are wagering on.
Basket bet - the worst bet in roulette,
this five number bet is based on
wagering on the 00, 0, 1, 2, or 3
square.
Outside Betting
Outside bets are made in the boxes that
encircle the numbers in the middle of
the table.
Red Black Odd and Even - these wagers
are all placed by putting your chips on
the boxes in the layout that are marked
red, black, odd, or even.
Dozens bet - these bets are made by
placing your chips on the boxes that are
marked 1 through 12, 13 through 24, or
25 through 36. If the 0 or 00 comes up
when you make this wager, you
automatically lose.
Column bet - these are based on the
vertical columns that correspond to the
numbers in the layout and are made at
the bottom of the grid.
Because roulette has a high house edge,
it's best to play at a full table to get
the maximum amount of spins per hour and
lessen your exposure to the edge. It is
permissible to wager on a square that
already has a bet on it. This is why
roulette uses different colored chips
for each player. Bets can be placed from
the time the dealer clears the table
from the previous spin all the way
through the next spin of the ball until
the caller calls 'No more bets'.
One thing to remember when you play or
get ready to play roulette is that there
is not sure fire system to beat the
wheel or the house edge. By simply
playing the game and letting Lady Luck
have her way, you will have a better
chance to win than following some
ineffective system.
